International Ankara Jazz Festival will take place as an online festival on its 24th year due to the health reasons that occupy the news worldwide. The preparations for the festival, which will take place between 30 April-10 May 2020, were almost complete and had to be reshaped due to the new situation arisen.
The festival has a different theme every year and aims to emphasize important topics through jazz.
Festival Curator and ‘Caz Derneği’ President Özlem Oktar Varoğlu summarizes the theme they chose while designing the festival as such: “We believe and observe that jazz is a democratic form of art as well as being free. Jazz musicians contribute to music as individuals and freely on the stage, they listen to each other and give each other space so that each and every one of them can be heard equally. Isn’t this what democracy is about? Art is a reflection of the society. We chose Freedom and Democracy in Jazz as our theme and we wanted to look at this form of art with the presence of prominent orchestras during the 24th year of the festival.”
‘Caz Derneği’ chooses the theme a year prior to the festival and announces it on the website, choosing among the bands that apply according to the theme.
Festival Director Tuğçe Alpaslan: “The festival projects were chosen this year but due to the ongoing situation caused by COVID-19, we need some extra time to announce the program. The program will be announced on ankaracazfestivali.com and cazdernegi.org shortly”.
The festival was planned to open with the concert which was to take place on the 30th of April 2020 on International Jazz Day with the collaboration of Caz Derneği, UNESCO and Herbie Hancock Jazz Institute. However, this was postponed.
The festival will house 18 events and the concerts will be broadcasted online with the highest quality of audio and video available until the 10th of May. Some of these concerts will be LIVE. The details will be announced in the upcoming days as the preparations are ongoing.
The design for this year’s theme was chosen with the collaboration with Başkent University Communications and Graphic Design Department after 3 months’ work. All of these works will be available to view on our website”.
