The 25th Izmir European Jazz Festival, organized by İzmir Foundation for Culture, Arts and Education (İKSEV) with the contributions of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, will be held between March 03 and 22, 2018.
The festival organized in cooperation with İstanbul Austrian Cultural Office, Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in İstanbul and Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Poland in İzmir, Goethe Institute İzmir, İstanbul Dimitrie Cantemir Romanian Cultural Institute, İzmir French Cultural Center, İzmir Honorary Consulate of Switzerland, Embassies of Spain and Estonia and İzmir Consulate of the Republic of Italy will start with the opening of the exhibition at AASSM on March 3, 2018 Saturday and Emin Fındıkoğlu +12 Concert.
The 25th İzmir European Jazz Festival will bring a magnificent jazz festival to the people of İzmir with its program, which includes eleven concerts, two exhibitions, a seminar, a movie screening, workshops and events.
Opening Concert from the Master
Emin Fındıkoğlu who has contributed greatly to Turkish jazz with his pianist, arranger, festival director and instructor attributes will perform at the opening concert of the 25th İzmir European Jazz Festival with his big band on March 13, 2018 Saturday at 20.00 at AASSM Concert Hall. The big jazz orchestra, Emin Fındıkoğlu +12, which he formed in 2015 to thank the 22nd IKSV Istanbul Jazz Festival for the “Lifetime Achievement Award” presented to him, embraces 16 jazz musicians including the young talents of Turkish jazz, as well as masters such as Şenova Ülker and İmer Demier. The repertoire of the group working with vocalists Meltem Ünel and Zeynep Kuyumcu consists of songs carefully selected and arranged by Fındıkoğlu. İzmir European Jazz Festival is proud to bring this great master together with his fans in Izmir at the 25th year.
On a search for the roots of the glorious jazz of the past: First Gig Never Happened
A trio that has embarked on a search for the roots of the glorious jazz of the past; Lisa Hofmaninger and Judith Schwarz and their congenial partner on the piano, Alexander Fitzthum will take the jazz lovers of Izmir on a journey with the music of jazz legends such as Charles Mingus and Thelonious Sphere Monk on March 5, 2018 Monday. Bowing to the masters with their unique way and brilliance, First Gig Never Happened will highlight the timeless aspect of their heroes’ music. The band creates something new out of the old, something that gets under your skin and sounds incredibly cool. First Gig Never Happened offers an amazing experience to the audience at the concert to be held in collaboration with the Istanbul Austrian Cultural Office. The concert will start at 20.00 as all the concerts and be held at AASSM Small Hall.
The Subtle Blending of Contrasting Styles: Marcin Masecki & Jerzy Rogiewicz
Marcin Masecki, one of Poland’s most compelling pianists, is joined by drummer Jerzy Rogiewicz in a program of classic Ragtimes and stride-piano hits. The music of James P. Johnson, Fats Waller and Eubie Blake is presented along with their Polish counterparts Henryk Wars and Jerzy Petersburski. Ragtime is one of Masecki’s many facets. One could even say that his tremendous versatility has become his trademark. The program Masecki elegantly fuses the different styles he works in; blurring the line between so-called high art and entertainment is at the 25th Izmir European Jazz Festival. An interesting experience awaits the audience at the concert held in collaboration with Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Istanbul and Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Izmir.
Likable trio of Sitar, piano and drums: Pulsar Trio
Highly energetic, driving beats and finely elaborated, vital melodies. The concert of the likable trio consisting of an unusual instrumentation of sitar, piano and drums where they create a groovy fusion of Jazz and World beats will take place at the 25th Izmir European Jazz Festival in collaboration with Goethe-Institut Izmir on March 7, 2018 Wednesday at AASSM Small Hall. The trio; Matyas Wolter (sitar), Beate Wein (piano) and Aaron Christ (drums) that does not cut down on surprises hence using influences from the verges of Jazz purism, will take the audience on an incredible journey of jazz.
Classical Musicians Passionate About Jazz Music: Ozana Barabancea & Band
The quartet consisting of all classical musicians passionate about jazz music; Ozana Barabancea (vocal), Sorin Zlat (piano), Virgil Popescu (bass guitar, composition) and Claudiu Purcarin (drums) will be at the 25th Izmir European Jazz Festival with their exciting program. The band which has performed in various national and international festivals and other important events for 10 years, will present a joyous music feast at the concert organized in collaboration with Dimitrie Cantemir Romanian Cultural Institute Istanbul on March 10, 2018 Saturday at AASSM Small Hall.
The Voice of Boundless Creativity: Leïla Martial Trio “Baa Box”
Leïla Martial, a voice of boundless creativity, a source of onomatopoeia which changes and transforms itself to adapt all soundscapes it browses. The trio will be at the 25th Izmir European Jazz Festival to jazz up the audience with their second album Baabel released on Laborie Jazz, which owes its richness to Pierre Tereygeol’s feverish guitar solos and Eric Perez’s changing rhythms into controlled waterfalls. Baabel delivers the most subtle and unexpected twists, switching from an urgent madness to serenity. The concert which will be held in collaboration with Izmir French Cultural Center on March 12, 2018 Monday at AASSM Small Hall will offer an outstanding music feast to the audience.
22 Years of Excellence: Bconnected Jazz Band
Bconnected Jazz Band, considered one of the best jazz-funk groups in Switzerland, will be at the 25th Izmir European Jazz Festival. Founded in 1994 by the Swiss guitarist Eugene Montenero, “bconnected” knew since its creation, to preserve a strong identity. With already 22 years of experience and their open-minded approach towards the world, bconnected is in perpetual evolution but keeping its roots in the tradition of the jazz music. The band consisting of Eugene Montenero (guitars, Bconnected founder), Fred Lopez (drums), Ivan De Luca (bass), Dominique Favre (keyboard, piano) and Philippe Sellam (saxophone) will capture the hearts of the audience at the concert to be held in collaboration with the Honorary Consulate of Switzerland in Izmir on March 13, 2018 Tuesday at AASSM Small Hall.
Symphonic Bop From Vein Trio & Aarhus Jazz Orchestra
The VEIN meets Aarhus Jazz Orchestra Symphonic Bop program offers contemporary music of kaleidoscopic breadth and variety, developing the creative vision of VEIN’s albums The Chamber Music Effect and VEIN plays RAVEL. Both the compositions by VEIN musicians, and the classical repertoire programmed alongside, have symphonic architecture, but they also have characteristic jazz groove and improvisation, which drive the music with energy and dynamism. This irresistible juxtaposition of expansive symphonic expression with VEIN’s nimble and sensitive execution creates very diverse musical expression which nonetheless finds unity. The concert to be held in cooperation with the Honorary Consulate of Switzerland in Izmir will present new horizons to the audience on March 15, 2018 Thursday at AASSM Small Hall.
Prominent Name of the International Scene: Iñaki Sandoval
Using his classic piano education as a basis for an extraordinary jazz career, Iñaki Sandoval proves his privileged place among Spanish jazz musicians at every concert. Sandoval, currently a professor and director at the University of Tartu Viljandi Cultural Academy in Estonia will at the 25th Izmir European Jazz Festival with his composition: bestesi “Estonian Suite: Live in Tallinn”. “Estonian Suite: Live in Tallinn” is inspired by Estonia: its people, traditions and culture, its beautiful nature and landscapes, forests, lakes and rivers, its peacefulness, winter, solitude and silence. The concert that will be held in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain and Estonia on March 16, 2018 Friday at AASSM Small Hall, offers an extraordinary program that invites the audience to withdrawal, meditation and inner reflection, even to listen with closed eyes.
The Idol of Contemporary Jazz Scene: Max Ionata Hammond Trio
The Hammond trio of Max Ionata (saxophone) who is among the leading players in the contemporary jazz scene and one of the most demanded worldwide, along with Luca Mannutza (hammond organ) and Adam Pache (drums) is at the 25th Izmir European Jazz Festival. The group featuring an exceptional array of talents, comprised of master musicians of international stature with a remarkable synergy that they exhibited during their many concerts over the years will meet the audience at the concert held in collaboration with the Consulate of the Republic of Italy in Izmir on March 20, 2018 Tuesday at AASSM Small Hall. The trio will lead the traditional Open Jazz Orchestra Workshop after the concert.
Concert and Education at the same time
Max Ionata Hammond Trio that will perform at the 25th Izmir European Jazz Festival in collaboration with the Consulate of the Republic of Italy in Izmir will lead the traditional Open Jazz Orchestra Workshop on March 21 and 22, 2018. Participating young jazz musicians and the trio will perform Open Jazz Orchestra Final Concert on March 22, 2018 Thursday at 20.00 at AASSM Small Hall.

16. Jazz Poster Exhibition
The poster of Özlem Yılmaz who is a graduate student of Erzurum Atatürk University Fine Arts Faculty won the 16th Jazz Poster Competition which is organized by İKSEV to determine the poster of the 25th İzmir European Jazz Festival. Selective committee members gave the second place to Beyza Kara, senior student of Akdeniz University Fine Arts Faculty Graphics Department, and third place to Melih Kızıl, student of İstanbul Şehir University Graphic Design Department. The Jury Special Award was given to Leyla Yaramış, Graduate Student of Erzurum Atatürk University Fine Arts Faculty and Graphic Artist Gökhan Pahlı. A total of 28 posters will be exhibited along with the award-winning posters at the Ahmet Adnan Saygun Arts Center (AASSM) Lower Lounge between March 3 and 22, 2018.
History of Jazz in Germany Photography Exhibition
The second exhibition of the 25th İzmir European Jazz Festival will be History of Jazz in Germany Photography Exhibition in collaboration with Goethe-Institut İzmir. The exhibition is about history of jazz music, as well as about its contemporary scene from the clubs and festivals, it tells the role of record labels and radio, introduces individuals and their style tendencies. The exhibition under the management of Dr. Wolfram Knauer of Darmstadt Jazz Institute could be visited at the AASSM Lower Lounge between March 3 and 22, 2018.
Write Stuff – A Jazz Writer is Rising
Izmir Foundation for Culture, Arts and Education (İKSEV) will organize a “Write Stuff” about jazz writing for journalism students within the scope of the 25th Izmir European Jazz Festival. The workshop will be directed by Ümit Tunçağ one of the best people in this field, journalist Sirel Ekşi and jazz historian, writer and journalist Francesco Martinelli. The workshop will begin on Monday, March 1st, 2018 with general information on jazz music. Students who will attend the festival concerts will be notified again before and/or afterwards concerts. The selected evaluations written after the festival will be published on www.jazzdergisi.com, the only jazz magazine of Turkey both Turkish and English.
Pulsar Trio Jazz Workshop
Pulsar Trio: Matyas Wolter (sitar), Beate Wein (piano), Aaron Christ (drums) will give a jazz workshop at IKSEV on March 8, 2018 Thursday between 10.00 and 13.00. Matyas Wolter will present the basic structure of classical Indian music, the related melodic concept of Raga and also the rhythmic circle of Tala. These structures will be transferred to be played on instruments of Western, Turkish and Indian culture. A piece will be developed corporately with composed and improvised parts in a group of maximum 15 participants.
The Topic of the seminar: Charles Mingus
The consultant of the festival, jazz historian, journalist-writer Francesco Martinelli will talk about legendary Charles Mingus at the traditional Jazz Seminar that draws as much interest as the concerts of İzmir European Jazz Festivals this year. The seminar that will be held on March 9, 2018 Friday at 18.00 at IKSEV will be translated to Turkish by Ümit Tunçağ.
Movie Screening: All Night Long
All Night Long (1962) directed by Basil Dearden and starring Patrick McGoohan, Keith Michell and Betsy Blair will bring us the best jazz musicians including Dave Brubeck and Charles Mingus in the atmosphere of a jazz club. All Night Long, one of the best jazz movies of its period and also inspired by Othello will be screened on March 9, 2018 Friday at 19.30 at the French Cultural Center.
Publik Market, which creates areas to bring local producers, craftsmen, designers and artists together, will bring jazz to the streets on March 10-11, 2018 between 13.00 and 19.30 at Edit & Chill with special designs and activities for the festival.
Bconnected Jazz Band Jazz Workshop
Bconnected Jazz Band: Eugene Montenero, guitar, Fred Lopez, drums, Ivan De Luca, bass, Dominique Favre, keyboard, piano, Philippe Sellam, saxaphone will give a workshop on March 13, 2018 Tuesday between 15.00-17.00 at İKSEV, themed improvisation & rhythm -how to play in a band.
Vein Trio Jazz Workshop
Vein Trio: Michael Arbenz (piano), Thomas Lähns (bass), Florian Arbenz (drums) will give a workshop on March 15, 2018 Thursday between 10.30 and 12.00 at İKSEV, themed the art of playing in a Rhythm-Section (Swinging, Grooving, Playing Forms, Interplay…).
The intersection of art, science and wisdom “Go”
IKSEV will introduce Go; one of the oldest mind games in the world on March 17, 2018 Saturday at 14.00 at IKSEV. İzmir Go Players Association will make an extensive presentation and talk about the principals of this game.
