This workshop, based on Judyʼs books, “Hear It and Sing It! Exploring Modal Jazz” and ““Hear It and Sing It! Exploring the Blues” will introduce vocalists to a fun and effective way to improve their vocal technique and improvisational skills by exploring and internalizing common scales used in jazz improvisation. Learning “by ear” is an essential part of becoming an accomplished improviser. To improvise spontaneously over chord changes, vocalists must able to hear the scale that each chord calls for. With the “Hear it and Sing It!” method, students become familiar with the aural “color” of each chord, and the mode or scale it implies, preparing them to become masterful improvisers as they move on to more complex chord progressions. Day 1 focuses on Modes of the Major Scale, Day 2 focuses on methods for improvisation on all types of Blues, and Day 3 focuses on integrating what has been taught in preparing for an informal performance by students in the evening.
Day 1 focuses on vocal technique and beginning improvisation using the Modes of the Major Scale and easy songs for improvisation.
Day 2 focuses on the Blues. Students can bring a Blues to work on and/or learn one that Judy will bring. We’ll explore Blues history and learn methods for improvisation on all types of Blues.
Day 3 focuses on integrating what has been taught on the previous days, applying it to individual performances of jazz standards or blues, and preparing for an informal performance by the students in the evening with a professional pianist.
