Serhan Erkol, a successful representative of the jazz scene, presents his new work “Melting Pot” to his listeners. Erkol’s 8-track album is fluid in its flow between genres and views the world musics from an egalitarian distance.
Saxophone master Serhan Erkol announced about his new album “Melting Pot” during the release of his single “Kuştepe Blues” and released it through Lin Records. The album embodies jazz, electronic and Turkish music elements and consists of 3 folk song arrangements and 5 compositions. The live performances of “Melting Pot” include original arrangements of pieces by legends like Abdullah İbrahim, Charlie Parker and Fela Kuti and improvizations that revolve around them.
The album adopts a novel approach instead of being confined by traditionalist forms and masterfully flows between genres. “Melting Pot” was recorded live at Hayyam Studios by Sinan Sakızlı and welcomes the listeners into the studio filled with esteemed musicians.
Erkol wrote all of the arrangements in the album and played the sexophone, ney as well as shouldering the vocals and electronic effects. He is accompanied by Barış Doğukan Yazıcı on the trumpet, Adem Gülşen and Kaan Bıyıkoğlu on the key instruments, Hammond organ and keyboards, Caner Üstündağ and Orhan Deniz on the bass guitar and Ediz Hafızoğlu and Ekin Cengizkan on the drums.
The album is produced by Alper Yılmaz, mixed by Mehmet Uğur Memiş and its mastering was done by Selim Sayeri.
Who is Serhan Erkol?
Serhan Erkol graduated from Bilgi University Music Department’s Saxophone branch and worked with Ricky Ford, Lawrence “Butch” Morris, Donovan Mixon, Aydın Esen, Can Kozlu and Ali Perret. He performed with Ricky Ford Orkestra, Donavan Mixon Quartet, Teneffüs and many other bands both locally and abroad at various clubs and festivals. He graduated in 2014 and was accepted into New England Conservatory Contemporary Improvisation Master program with Fulbright scholarship. Here he had the opportunity to work with Ran Blake, George Garzone, Peter Row, Jerry Bergonzi, Allen Chase, Joe Morris and Anthony Coleman.
Erkol currently lives in Istanbul and takes part in various projects as a professional musician while working on his own projects as well. The musician released an album called “Motel ATM” in December 2016, and is now presenting “Melting Pot” which he released through Lin Records.
