These days mark the rise of creativity and variety in jazz as some of the best examples of fusion (I explained what “fusion” means in my previous articles, but let’s call it “Good things successfully coming together in a melting pot” this time around) find their way to us. It isn’t easy to bring Classical Turkish Music, one of the most important genres along with its equals, into this melting pot in the right and sensible way, to “shape” it and to “color it” in order to make the audience like it. Yaprak Sayar shoulders this great responsibility with ease in his first DMC studio album “Caz Musikisi” as he is accompanied by some of the greatest jazz musicians in the country. He presents an unforgettable 48 minutes that smoothly flow. Yaprak, born in 1987, is accepted to ITU Turkish Music State Conservatoire Vocal Training department with a perfect score in 2005 and the doors start opening for the young musician. Attentive listeners will remember Yaprak’s performance in a history program on a TV channel. I remember hearing his voice for the first time in ‘Mahzun Gönül Heyhat’ in “Girizgah” album released from Kalan Müzik and his rendition of “Zehretme Hayatı Bana Cananım” in a compilation album commemorating Zeki Müren allowed me to follow his work closely.
It is an evidence to how brave Yaprak is that he chose to test himself and combine such a special genre as Classical Turkish Music with a unique genre like jazz instead of releasing a purely Classical Turkish Music album as a Classical Turkish Music artist.
There are some small details that make “Caz Musikisi” special. One of these is the fact that hearing two different genres boil down in the same pot does not feel out of place for the listener. The way a few existing jazz maqams (or modes in jazz terms) harmonize with about 590 Claasical Turkish Music maqams in the first piece of the album, “Gül Açılsın Dudağında Gülü Ver”, right from the start warrants pure attention on the listener’s part. Kürdîlî Hicazkâr excitedly wears his new festive and colorful shirt given to him and the shirt fits him perfectly and is admired. This harmony is easily heard in dynamic pieces like “Kara Kız (Kaşların Ne Güzel Kara Kız)” as well as in calmer ones like “Sarı Gelin (Erzurum Çarşı Pazar)”.
Musical education in our country, especially jazz education, keeps improving and renewing itself. The fact that Yaprak has one of the best institutions on this subject, Bahçeşehir University, alone shows how great this album is… Some of the esteemed members of the teaching staff of Bahçeşehir University’s Jazz Certificate Program and Graduate programs such as Kağan Yıldız, Şenova Ülker and Bulut Gülen accompany Yaprak in the album. Baki Duyarlar (I am proud to be his student in the same program) plays the piano as these beautiful pieces shape up and has made all their arrangements. Duyarlar has made our generation like the sound of classical kemenche with his project “Kemenjazz” and he is accompanied by his bandmate Derya Türkan and his colleague Erkan Oğur, who worked with him in his projects with Ortaçgil, on the fretless guitar and komuz.
Original projects such as ”Caz Musikisi” and the leading name of this “mixed philosophy”, Kemenjazz, already exist and I hope more will emerge to break the cliches and provide a wider perspective on things.
Those who seek beautiful, sincere and warm music will not have to look far and search for alternatives, because Yaprak achieved this with a legendary group of bandmates in “Caz Musikisi”. Looking forward to an album launch concert with the same musicians!
