The 18th Alanya International Jazz Days, which took place under the lights of Alanya Castle in the historical Kızılkule Square between 21-24 September 2023, hosted world jazz stars this year, as every year. Alanya Jazz Days, which is among the first festivals that come to mind when jazz is mentioned in Turkey, hosted music lovers with its magnificent atmosphere for 4 days with magnificent concerts.
18th Alanya International Jazz Days started on Thursday, September 21st at 20:30 with Daniela Simmons & Atilla Şereftuğ “But Jazz” band. After the performance of the band consisting of world-famous names such as Francis Coletta and Arnaud Francelet, Elif Sanchez, who made our country proud with many awards, met with jazz lovers at 22.00.
Daniela Simmons, is not only an Italian jazz and pop vocalist, but also a musician whose voice carries her compositions and is successful in her interpretations. Through a clever blend of musical styles influenced by pop, R&B, jazz and instrumentals, both extremes combine smoothness and power.
Atilla Şereftuğ, Istanbul-born jazz pianist Atilla Şereftuğ, is known to the public as an internationally renowned composer. He was the first to know and discover Celine Dion. He came first in the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest as the composer of the song “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi” performed by Celine Dion. The song became an international success and a rank for both Celine’s career and Atilla’s as a producer. 1986 was his first attempt at the Eurovision Song Contest, where his song “Pas pour moi” performed by Daniela Simmons came in 2nd place.
Atilla Şereftuğ’s career started very early, at the age of 13 he was a professional pianist and arranger. After completing his education at Istanbul Conservatory, he stepped into the jazz scene with various orchestra groups. He came to Europe in the 1970s and collaborated as producer, composer and arranger with many artists from the worlds of Pop, French and German music, produced and edited it. He is one of the most talented and brilliant pianists and producers of the jazz scene.
Francis Coletta was born on October 28, 1957 in Marseille. He studied classical guitar from the beginning and later played in different classical, jazz and pop music orchestras. Francis Coletta has played with Michel Legrand, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Paul Anka, Tomm Scott, Joe Sample, Alex Acuna, Randy Brecker, Niels-Henning Orsted-Pedersen, Joe di Francesco, Alvin Queen, Reggie Johnson, among others. He also accompanied many French pop singers on tour, for example Michel Berger and Michel Fugain. While he played in groups such as Pepe Lienhard Band, Udo Jürgens, Catarina Valente,
Arnaud Francelet has made various studio productions with international artists. He performs regularly in Switzerland and has toured all over Europe, the USA, as well as Asia such as Japan, China, India and many more. Arnaud participates in various musicals and has made several appearances with famous musicians such as John di Martino, Juan Munguia, Daniel Woodtli and many more.
After receiving music education from her family until the age of 10, Elif Sanchez graduated from Istanbul State Conservatory with an outstanding achievement award. Coming from a family of musicians, she wins the appreciation of the audience with his musical style that blends Turkish Folk Music and jazz education with his unique interpretation of songs from Anatolia and Azerbaijan to Spanish songs. She was invited as a guest artist to the “Refuge of Sound” project by world-famous composer, guitarist and producer Javier Limon, with the “Mediant Collective” group he founded in 2015. Elif Sanchez, who graduated from Berklee College of Music by winning the Bill Pierce Award and the Mediterranean Music Institute Award in 2017. She gave many concerts at Drom NYC, Rockwood Music Hall and The Well Brooklyn. Following her first album, which she published under her own name in 2021 and offers a wide repertoire stretching from Anatolia to Azerbaijan, Elif Sanchez’s second album, consisting of 11 pieces, includes 7 original Javier Limon songs, 2 Spanish covers, “Dos Gardenias” and “Perfidia”, She included “Vuelve (Kurşun Adres Sormaz ki)”, which she sang as a duet with Kenan Doğulu, and Amanecer (Gel Ey Seher), which he sang in Spanish. She recorded the famous bolero song ‘Tres Palabras’ with Paul Sanchez, sang the song ‘A Donde Te Has Ido’ in Javier Limon’s latest album ‘Viajeras’.
Alafsar Rahimov – Balaban Meets Jazz Special Guest Elnur Huseynov will meet the people of Alanya on Friday, September 22, at 20.30. Acantha Lang will take the stage at 22:00 on the same night.
Alafsar Rahimov was born in Azerbaijan. He started his musical career by starting to play the balaban at the age of 10. He is known as the grandson of Elefser Shaki, one of Azerbaijan’s important zurna masters. After taking lessons from Ayyub Mammadov, he joined the Azerbaijan State Conservatory in 2005. Rahimov participated in concerts and festivals in countries such as America, Germany, China, Switzerland, Norway, France, Italy, Tunisia, Georgia and Korea. He performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2011. He got a certificate and diploma with his performance at the Royal World Drums Festival in Malaysia in 2013. He took part in rhythm master Natig Shirinov’s group between 2007 and 2015. One of his own compositions was performed at the Eurovision opening ceremony in 2012. In 2023, he released the album “Sexy Caffards” with Etibar Asadli. He created a modern soundscape by blending jazz, soul and electronic motifs. Artists such as Kidbekid, Martin Wangermee, Kevin Lazakis, Harini Iyer and Natasha Brown also appeared in the album.
Elnur Huseynov, with his extraordinary talent, voice that effortlessly transcends boundaries and stage presence, he has proven in the contemporary Azerbaijani music scene. The strong emotions in his performances, soul-stirring presentations and unwavering devotion to his art attract attention. Throughout his career, Elnur has got the recognition and praise he deserves for his talent. He represented Azerbaijan twice in the Eurovision Song Contest. Elnur’s performances, which came first in “O Ses Türkiye” in Turkey, received great applause and admiration from thousands of audiance in Turkey and Europe. Beyond his musical endeavors, Elnur is dedicated to making a positive impact on the world. He is actively involved in a variety of humanitarian efforts and philanthropic initiatives, using his career to inspire positive change through the unifying power of music.
Acantha Lang, American Soul artist born in New Orleans, decided to continue her career in London a while ago. As soon as she arrived in London, she made a name for herself with her live stages and performances paying tribute to Soul music legends.
Simultaneously, she began writing songs for Grammy-nominated Robert Randolph & The Family Band. Her debut EP album Sugar woman was selected as The New Artist of the Year Award for the 2021 Soul Tracks Readers’ Choice Awards. She appeared on the cover of the iconic Blues and Souls magazine with her album Beautiful Dreams, which was released on June 30. As of the summer of 2023, she has performed and continues to perform at major jazz festivals in Europe, including the La Grapa Black Music Festival.
Cem Tuncer Quintet will perform the third day of the 18th Alanya International Jazz Days on Saturday, September 23. At 22.00, Denise King – Alain Jean Marie Quartet will take the stage.
Cem Tuncer Quintet, M. Cem Tuncer was born in 1978. In 1997, he studied Guitar with Sarp Maden and Gökçen Taşkıran, Music Theory with Semih Korucu and Mehmet Nemutlu, and Ensemble with Bülent Ortaçgil and Önder Focan at the Academy Istanbul Jazz Department. In 1998, he received a scholarship from Istanbul Bilgi University Music Department. During his undergraduate studies, he worked with very valuable musicians such as Neşet Ruacan, Kamil Özler, Ali Perret, L.Butch Morris, Can Kozlu, Aydın Esen, İmer Demirer, Ricky Ford, Selen Gülün, Mike Wilkens, Jeff Mcaulley, Ayşe Özbekligil. On his own behalf and with various groups, he performed at the Sfinks Music Festival (Belgium) and Amsterdam Music Festival (Netherlands) in 1999; Hildesheim Music Festival (Germany) in 2000; In 2002, he participated in the Ghent Music Festival and the Brussels Ethnic Music Festival (Belgium). He also gave concerts abroad in many cities such as Zurich, Basel, Stuttgart, Cologne, Berlin, Hanover and Amsterdam. In the same year, he gave duo concerts with Ricky Ford Istanbul Jazz Collective and Önder Focan at Istanbul Babylon. He also worked as Assistant Arranger in Önder Focan’s Purple in Blue project.
Denise King is an American singer. He found his own way, without any connections, and found his place in jazz as a natural singer.
Under the influence of Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin, but with her own style, she mixed jazz with blues and soul music and became a real diva. She has a personality all her own, has gone down in jazz history with her positive energy and understanding of swing on stage, and has become one of the rare musicians who perform songs with experience, using the artificial jazz language. She has participated in festivals and given concerts in all European countries as well as in far eastern countries such as Japan.
Alain Jean-Marie, pianist born on the island of Guadeloupe, settled in Canada and took his first step into the world of jazz. Later, he settled completely in Paris. He accompanied famous musicians such as Clark Terry, Max Roach, Harry Edison and Bill Coleman. Alain Jean-Marie, who has played with many names in jazz history to date, is one of the legendary names of French jazz. Because he is one of the most sought-after musicians, pages are not enough to describe his musical life.
Historical Kızılkule will host the closing day on Sunday, September 24, with TRT Istanbul Radio Jazz Orchestra and Sibel Köse.
TRT Istanbul Radio Jazz Orchestra was founded in 1982 by the gathering of successful and distinguished musicians of our country. The orchestra, which was the first and only example of its kind in the years it was founded, continues its efforts to make jazz music reach wider audiences and become more widespread. TRT Jazz Orchestra, which successfully presents national and universal music examples to music lovers, has the distinction of having an original jazz repertoire while preserving its Big Band structure. TRT Big Band successfully represents TRT Corporation and our country in national and international cultural and artistic events, in addition to radio-television programs. The orchestra continued its work with conductor Süheyl Denizci from its establishment until 1998, conductor Neşet Ruacan until 2011, and conductor Kamil Özler until September 2018. Conductor of TRT Light Music and Jazz Orchestra’s all-star ensemble; Cem Tuncer continues to work with his producers Murat Aydoğdu.
Sibel Köse is one of Turkey’s leading jazz singers. She was born in Ankara and completed her education there, started singing professionally when she was a student at METU Faculty of Architecture. While gaining experience by working with jazz masters, she also attended international seminars and summer schools; took part in festivals. She stands out with his rich and deep interpretations and natural improvisational talent, participated in the Zamosc (Poland) International Jazz Vocalists Competition in 1992 and got the First Prize. Sibel Köse regularly sings in concerts accompanied by leading jazz musicians, appears in albums, and participates in festivals, radio and TV programs. She participates in and acts as a soloist in different projects and groups ranging from duos to large orchestras in Turkey and abroad, and regularly sings in important festivals and art events. She has sung in more than 20 countries to date. She has an album called “Love Songs”.
