- THE CHAPTER OF NORTH
October 20th / Sunday / 15:00
SOHO HOUSE
Jazz programmer and enthusiast Hakan Rauf Tüfekçi dissects an overlooked chapter in Turkish jazz history.
Many important jazz musicians settled in Europe when Afro-American jazz musicians began to emigrate to Europe for economic, political and social reasons after the Second World War. Turkey went through a similar period from the end of the 1960s to the 1980s. During the course of this migration, which might be called a “Migration to the North”, some of the Turkish jazzers who went to the Scandinavian countries settled in there and collaborated with local musicians for many important projects and gained international acclaim. In this panel, inspirational jazz musicians of Turkey will talk and debate about those days and the effects of this migration on Turkish jazz.

OCTOBER 21 th / SUNDAY / 13:00
PERA PALACE ORIENT BAR
Visionary drummer and one of the pioneers of the Turkish jazz scene, Erol Pekcan, whom we lost at the age of 61 in 1994, was so much more than an interpreter. With the successful ensembles and orchestras he founded, his broadcasts on Ankara and Istanbul radio stations and his brilliant television programs, he has inspired a new generation of jazz culture amongst younger generations and thanks to him jazz music has reached a wider audience. It is impossible to forget his sweet presentations both at the Parliament Super Band concerts and Akbank Jazz Festival stages, for the latter of which he was accompanied by two seminal figures who are no longer with us, former Akbank CEO and board member Hamit Belli and the co-founder of Pozitif, Mehmet Uluğ.
We will honor the memory of dear Erol Pekcan on the 28th year of the festival with his family and friends.

NARDIS
Jazz singer and composer Caloé, follows in the footsteps of her musical idol Ella Fitzgerald and tries to pursue new horizons by interpreting the “scat” technique. Creating her own rainbow with songs inspired by different cultures, and a vast repertoire of covers, improvisations and her characteristic vocal, this young talent also does justice to always being surrounded by amazingly good musicians. She shares her music via her YouTube channel every month, with new videos showcasing snapshots from her life in France. At the beginning of this year Caloé released two new singles, Stevie Wonder’s Part Time Lover cover and Soleil d’Hiver. In addition to being a semi-finalist at the Montreux Jazz Festival’s contest, she has performed at major jazz venues in cities such as New York, Mexico, Oslo and Stockholm. Bringing a French breeze to the city, Caloé’s first concert in Istanbul definitely is not to be missed.

- KOFFİ KWAHULÉ: JAZZ AS AN INSPIRATION FOR THEATRE
OCTOBER 22nd / MONDAY / 19:00
THE INSTITUT FRANÇAIS
With more than thirty plays to his credit and being honored with many awards, Koffi Kwahulé remains today one of the most widely performed African drama writers at the international level. While the works of Kwahulé, often decorated with musical notes, make the audience journey into a strange and an original world, a serenity reminiscent of jazz gives the author its musical tone. Jazz accompanying and enriching Kwahulé’s theater works, also adds an irregular rhythm to the progress of his texts. At times panting and sometimes jerky, jazz is the cornerstone of the author’s dramaturgical writing. Known globally and in Turkey for his well-toured works Brasserie, Big Shoot, Blue-S-Cat and preparing to stage L’odeur des arbres, Kwahulé will discuss the influence of jazz on his writing in light of the relationship between these two artistic disciplines.
