28th Istanbul Jazz Festival, taking place between 26th of June-13th of July 2021 with the sponsorship of Garanti BBVA is now accepting applications for its Young Jazz concert series. Young Jazz, celebrating its 19th anniversary this year, provides a platform for amateur or semi-professional young musicians and bands in Turkey and gives them an opportunity to be a part of the festival’s program. Young Jazz aims to encourage and prepare young musicians under the age of 30 for the professional world of music. Young Jazz musicians will be performing at Jazz at Parks events around the city which will be free of charge for the audiences.
The musicians and bands wishing to to apply for Young Jazz and to take part in the album produced by Sony Music Turkey and IKSV can reach detailed information on iksv.org/genccaz. The applications will be done through the online form located on this webpage until the 24th of May, Monday.
A First for this Year: Young Jazz Album
The musicians chosen to take part in Young Jazz concert series will be featured in an album produced by Sony Music Turkey and IKSV and released on digital platforms. 10 bands chosen by the selection committee of Young Jazz will be invited to the evaluation concert that will take place on the 6th of June at Salon IKSV. The elimination concert will be broadcasted live on IKSV’s Youtube page and will be compiled to create the album. The mixing and mastering of the album will be done by Babajim Istanbul Studios.
Istanbul Jazz Festival has been working to support young musicians for the past 19 years as they get ready for the professional world of music and now aims to encourage the production of new music and pieces through this new collaboration with Sony Music Turkey.
Who can apply?
Musicians and bands that haven’t released a professional album and are below the age of 30 can apply to Young Jazz. The demos sent can be in classical or contemporary jazz genres as well as blues, funk, soul or jazz-inspired ethnic music. The repertoire could consist of original compositions of the applicants or jazz standards or interpretations of other pieces. The musicians contributing to the album are encouraged to apply with their own compositions (lyrics-music). The musicians who are chosen for the elimination concert will be announced on the festival’s website on the 1st of June. Organizers also ask the candidates applying for the selection process to send an e-mail with their intent to apply to Young Jazz to the contact e-mail on the Young Jazz website in order to facilitate easier communication.

The selection committee of Young Jazz consists of: Musician Aycan Teztel, musician Cenk Erdoğan, music writer Leyla Diana Gücük, musician Kalben, musician Selen Gülün, musician Volkan Öktem, radio programmer Dr. Hakan Rauf Tüfekçi, author Yekta Kopan, Sony Music Turkey CEO Özden Bora and the director of Istanbul Jazz Festival Harun İzer.
About Young Jazz
Young Jazz concerts gave more than 80 young musicians and bands the opportunity to perform alongside world-famous jazz musicians in the past 19 years. The musicians participated in other festivals following Istanbul Jazz Festival and performed at various jazz clubs in Turkey and many other countries.
