Famous names of jazz meet music lovers at the 3rd Antalya Akra Jazz Festival. The festival will feature modern and classical jazz as well as funk, rock, Latin, soul and electronic genres. The festival was supposed to take place in June but was postponed due to the precautions taken by the appropriate ministries of the Republic of Turkey and limitations on international travel. The 3rd Antalya Akra Jazz Festival will now take place between 26 September-09 October on Akra Hotels’ open air stage with the magnificent backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea and the Bey Mountains. The tickets will be for sale internationally at Biletix booths and biletix.com on the 10th of August.
The festival will take off with the beloved Turkish musician who current resides in Holland Karsu’s concert on its third year. The opening concert will take place on the 26th of September and will feature Karsu’s compositions which combine jazz, blues, funk and ethnic rhythms as accompanied by Akra Jazz Band.
Guitarist Önder Focan and Şallıel Brothers will take the stage on the 30th of September with their “Funkbook” project which embodies “funk jazz” interpretations of Önder Focan’s compositions and some Turkish music pieces.
“Sonic Boom” was founded by Elif Çağlar (vocals), Çağrı Sertel (keyed instruments), Alp Ersönmez (bass guitar) and Volkan Öktem’in (drums) in 2019. “Sonic Boom” concert will take place on the 2nd of October.
Acoustic jazz manouche band Flapper Swing will give one of the most colorful concerts of the festival with their “Swing Night” on the 3rd of October during which they will perform the jazz standards of the 20s and 30s. “Swing Dance Antalya” will accompany the band during this concert.
İlhan Erşahin continues to wow with his portrayal of the dynamic colors of Istanbul with his “İstanbul Sessions” project on the 7th of October.
World famous pianist and composer Fazıl Say will be participating in the festival for the third year in a row. He will give two concerts on the 8th and 9th of October and perform his latest and fourth album that features the unforgettable poets and authors of Turkish literature for the first time in Antalya. Serenad Bağcan will accompany Fazıl Say with her strong voice and enchanting stage performance.
Colorful voice of the European Stages “Karsu”
Karsu, who has received world-wide acclaim with her unique interpretation and strong voice, will perform the opening concert of the festival. The musician writes and performs mostly her own compositions and her stage performance and energy is just as admired as her colorful voice. Karsu has solidified her presence on the European jazz stages by winning Edison World Jazz Award, one of the most prestigious music awards of Holland, in 2016. Her album features jazz, blues, funk and ethnic rhythms. Karsu will perform at 20:30 on the evening of the 26th of September Saturday. The evening will also feature Akra Jazz Band, formed by jazz musicians living in Antalya.
Önder Focan and Şallıel Brothers will perform “ Funkbook”
The second evening of the festival will feature guitarist Önder Focan and saxophonist brothers kardeşler Anıl and Batuhan Şallıel with their collaboration “Funkbook”. “Funkbook” project showcases Önder Focan compositions as well as some pieces from Turkish music interpreted in “funk jazz” style. The musicians are accompanied by Halil İbrahim Işık (piano-synthesizer), Mehmet Özen (electric bass) and Erhan Seçkin (drums). “Funkbook”, which captures Önder Focan’s melodic compositions and the improvizations of the musicians in a unique manner, will take place at 20:30 on the 30th of September Wednesday at Akra Hotels.
“Sonic Boom” Energy
“Sonic Boom” was founded by four successful musicians, Elif Çağlar (vocals), Çağrı Sertel (keyed instruments), Alp Ersönmez (bass guitar) and Volkan Öktem’in (drums), in 2019. The band will perform their own compositions as well as R&B, hip-hop and electronic music hits since 2020. Sonic Boom recorded their first album in February which features their own compositions. “Please” will be the first single released from the album. The band will perform at 20:30 on the 2nd of October Friday at Akra Hotels.
A Magnificent “Swing Night” with Flapper Swing
Flapper Swing, an acoustic jazz manouche band, will give one of the most colorful concerts of the festival with their “Swing Night”. The band’s repertoire includes pieces by Django Reinhardt and jazz standards from 1920s and 30s and the members consist of Nevin Hetmanek (vocals), Erhan Erbelger and Tomas Hetmanek (guitar), Tamer Temel (clarinet), Peter Salvucci ( saxophone), Kaan Bıyıkoğlu (piano) and Volkan Topakoğlu (double bass). Flapper Swing has its own special listener base and will perform at 20:30 on the 3rd of October 2020 Saturday at Akra Hotels. They will be accompanied by “Swing Dance Antalya”.
İlhan Erşahin and “İstanbul Sessions”
Saxophonist İlhan Erşahin, who currently resides in New York, received world-wide acclaim with his “Istanbul Sessions” project which features all the dynamic colors of Istanbul. In this project which embodies many different genres such as jazz, rock, disco and dub, Erşahin is accompanied by Alp Ersönmez on the bass guitar, Turgut Alp Bekoğlu on the drums and İzzet Kızıl on percussion. The band will perform at 20:30 on the 7th of October Wednesday at Akra Hotels.
Fazıl Say will perform his new song album for the first time in Antalya…
The festival will draw to a close on its third year with two magnificent concerts by the world-famous pianist and composer Fazıl Say. The musician will perform his latest and fourth album that features the unforgettable poets and authors of Turkish literature for the first time in Antalya. Serenad Bağcan will accompany Fazıl Say with her strong voice and enchanting stage performance. The new album includes poems by Yunus Emre, Pir Sultan Abdal, Sabahattin Ali, Kaygusuz Abdal, Aziz Nesin, Metin Altıok and Ömer Hayyam. These incredible concerts by Fazıl Say and Serenad Bağcan will take place at 20:30 on the 8th and 9th of October at Akra Hotels.
