Stanley Clarke is one of the first names that come to mind along with Jaco Pastorius when bass guitar is concerned. It wouldn’t be too much of an exaggeration to call him a “living legend”. The musician, who has achieved great success in many different genres, is known for his work in jazz and jazz fusion by Turkish audiences.
Clarke, born in Philadelphia in 1951, started his music journey with accordion and got interested in violin and cello, finally deciding upon bass guitar. He got the opportunity to work with prominent jazz musicians after moving to New York. This journey which started with Pharaoh Sanders reached its climax with his work with Chick Corea in the 70s jazz-fusion band Return to Forever. He worked with Quincy Jones, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, The Police, Herbie Hancock, Al di Meola, Bob Marley and Miles Davis and recorded more than 40 albums. He received 4 Grammy Awards. He was chosen the “Best Bass Guitarist” by the readers and critics of the famous Downbeat magazine.
Stanley Clarke achieved something else in addition to his illustrious career and started a foundation with his wife Sofia 17 years ago. This foundation welcomes young musicians and provides them with scholarships.
