Joan Baez, one of the most influential names of the 1968 generation, will be performing in Izmir with the cooperation of Istanbul Kültür Sanat Vakfı (İKSV), İzmir Kültür Sanat ve Eğitim Vakfı (İKSEV) and Passion Turca. Joan Baez is known for combining her experiences as a witness to an important period in history and her artistic aspect in her music. She will be performing on the 12th of August, Friday, at İzmir Kültürpark Açıkhava Tiyatrosu and the ticket sales will start on the 28th of June, Tuesday. She will sing her most unforgettable songs and it will be a night to remember.
Joan Baez has performed in the Efes Antik Tiyatro (Ephesus Theater) in 1988 and 1989 during the 2nd and 3rd International Izmir Festivals, in 1988, 1989 and 1993 during the Istanbul Festival and more recently in 2004 and 2015 during Istanbul Jazz Festival. Baez celebrated her 75th birthday in January with a concert that featured stars like Paul Simon, Damien Rice, Jackson Browne and Mavis Staples Emmylou Harris. She will be performing traditional ballads, blues classics, cowboy songs and ethnic folk melodies, loaded with personal messages, during her performance in Izmir.
Ever since performing for the first time in her life at the age of 18 in 1953 at the 1st Newport Folk Festival, Joan Baez became the voice of freedom and human rights and is known for being an activist.
Joan Baez’s “Diamonds and Rust” album, which was released in 1975, featured songs by famous musicians such as Jackson Browne, Janis Ian, John Prine, Stevie Wonder & Syreeta, Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band and Bob Dylan. She has released more than 30 albums, including the successful and famous “Diamonds and Rust”. She has performed her own compositions as well as those by musicians like Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan. Baez is well known for her activist identity as much as she is known for her music. She received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. The musician also received Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience award in May 2015.
