Cenk, one of the two sons of musicians Randy and Aydın Esen, graduated from Berklee in America and returned to his country of birth. We conducted a mini interview with him.
Cenk how old are you?
I was born in 1999 in Istanbul.
When did you start playing the piano?
I started playing the piano when I was 9 years old but my interest peaked after attending Berklee School of Music’s “Umbria Jazz Clinics” program in Perugia Italy when I was 16 years old. I studied at Berklee ‘Global Jazz’ Institute founded and directed by Danilo Perez, a piano performance graduate from Berklee.
Who have you worked with?
I worked with masters such as John Patitucci, Dave Liebman, Terri Lyne Carrington and George Garzone.
I am sure you have your own compositions, but have you had time to record any?
Yes, we released my ‘Phases’ Project as an EP in December 2019. Our first EP is a part of the “Mysthree” Project we released in August 2019. I am also a member of Portrait and a Dream. My first EP called ‘Red Planet’ was released in October.
Music life is taking a halt due to Corona, what are in your plans? What are your goals?
Yes, the music industry is currently having a really tough time but what we can do as artists is endless, it should never end. I have new projects in mind and I have delved deeply into compositions since March and have been making plans fort he future. I will be living in London starting from September and will continue my career there for a while. Developing projects at an international level and being in contact with musicians are very important to me, my biggest goal is to continue with this.
